Sushi: Epilogue

On Friday, June 3, 2011, I walked half a mile with a cake on my head.

Though the erratic gusts tossed some of my peers' hats, I somehow made it to my assigned seat without incident.

...but it had slipped my mind that strong winds come with falling branches.

After narrowly missing my head, one bounced off the schedule in my hand—thus narrowly missing the cake, which had meanwhile moved to my lap. Nearly eight years of living in Massachusetts without being struck came to an end... but my head and my cake remained unscathed.

As my turn approached, I pulled nori, rice, and alginate pearls out of my pocket and assembled the final decorations. I looked over the parts and recalled...

The cake was the latest item I'd learned to bake—my baking adventures having begun with a quest to make egg-free cookies without a pre-assembled egg substitute.

The egg substitute I ended up using for cookies was mochi—and how fitting it was that the mochi was my gateway! Mochi ice cream was my first success at making unusual foods.

...but really, it began with the sushi; and the sushi, a side quest in a still-unrealized dream hatched by a Timon & Pumbaa cartoon, is what reminds me that this is only the beginning.

Me, all spiffed up.

Whatever comes after sushi, I'll always remember the moment the school's president said to me, "That's cute! A cake main group!"

The main group.

Happy International Sushi Day, everyone! (h/t cesium12)

Yes. As soon as I get the photos of it from my dad, I'll be posting it as well. :)
